    The Technical Services Scientist will be responsible for the design and execution of laboratory work for the technical services team in support of the business’ commercial objectives. This position will work closely with the Technical Service and Applications Manager on a day-to-day basis. .

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or similar field in the physical sciences and engineering. Preferred 2 years of chemical laboratory experience, which can be drawn from a combination of academic, industrial, and/or experiential training.

  • Knowledge in chemistry, mineralogy, materials, or industrial chemical processes is important along with a strong understanding of fundamental scientific principles.

  • Must be “hands-on”, detail oriented, and demonstrate mechanical and chemical aptitude to apply knowledge and data to real world problems.

  • Exhibit a high level of curiosity. Stay up to date on pertinent technologies, techniques, and industry developments. Willingness to learn manufacturing processes.

  • Able to think critically and independently execute and validate experiments when given guidance to key objectives. Actively looks to improve methods, processes, and equipment. Strong data analysis and interpretation skills are essential.

  • Self-motivated and results oriented. Able to perform routine tasks and special projects while finishing work in a timely manner. Must be able to balance and prioritize multiple projects in parallel and work with a sense of urgency.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (includes Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

  • Must have effective interpersonal skills to interact and collaborate with personnel across the business including commercial, operations, R&D, and quality and with outside customers as needed.

  • Must be a strong team player, able to work with both MLC and customer organizations.

  • Ability to operate in both laboratory environment and manufacturing environment is essential.

  • Experience in related industries (metals refining, steel, cement, glass, environmental, chemicals, etc.) is desired but not essential.

    Essential Functions

  • Design and execute laboratory studies and report findings. Verify methods and results when necessary.

  • Assist in the development of new methods in conjunction with standard methods to analyze “non-standard” samples.

  • Exhibit creative approaches in applying available techniques to new challenges.

  • Document procedures, record observations, organize and analyze data, extract key results and report findings in support of projects. Maintain detailed records of research activities.

  • Support internal research on the development of new products and processes for the manufacturing of new products through laboratory experimentation. Aid in the development and execution of applications testing targeted at key market opportunities.

  • Work with the Technical Services Manager to generate specialized analysis in relationship to customer product applications.

  • Collaborate and provide research and analytical support to both internal (operations, sales, QC etc.) and external customers to aid in the troubleshooting and product development processes.

  • Operate instrumentation such as Powder X-Ray Diffraction, X-ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis, Particle Size Analysis, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, ICP, etc. and use corresponding software to interpret results.

  • Maintain, calibrate, and run performance verification on instruments. Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed. Order supplies. Ensure proper disposal of waste. Upkeep of chemical inventory and SDS library for all laboratory chemicals.

  • Complete experimental work in a timely, safe and professional manner. Prioritize initiatives in order to move multiple projects towards completion.

  • Compile, review, and summarize literature and patents surrounding technologies pertinent to our processes and our customers process’s.

  • Sustain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.

  • Assess safety requirements on all projects; promote safety adhering to all M.S.H.A. requirements and regulations personally, to coworkers and integrate into all projects assigned.
